2021: Year-End Awards

For the third consecutive year, Sports Business Journal is devoting part of our final issue of the year to some of the best people, places and moments of the past 12 months. Our Year-End Awards for 2021 honor just a sampling of what made this one of the most remarkable years ever for the industry: a baseball game under a heavenly sky in an Iowa cornfield. A superstar brother act that is re-imagining the possibilities of sports on television. A new arena with the mission of a superhero. And that is to say nothing of a hire that shattered a glass ceiling, merchandise sales that set records and a deal that transformed college athletics for the entire nation. Not bad for a year during a pandemic.

Quote of the Day
I love it that we beat the hot, sexy southern cities. Michigan and Ohio, in particular, we always struggle to have these kinds of wins when we're competing against these hot, sexy cities. And I love it today that we stuck it to them and we won.
-- Pistons Vice Chair Arn Tellem, on the likes of Detroit and Cleveland getting WNBA expansion teams over southern cities that are often referred to as new centers of business growth.
