Charlotte FC’s voice of the people

On a cloudy February afternoon, Shawn McIntosh slipped away from work long enough to get lunch at Tupelo Honey, a trendy Southern cuisine-style restaurant in uptown Charlotte. As one of the newest members of the front office of Charlotte FC, the MLS expansion team whose Feb. 26 debut was less than three weeks away, it wasn’t a surprise that McIntosh didn’t get very far into his Southern chicken BLT before his phone started buzzing with messages from his bosses. These were not the people he answers to back at the team’s offices, however. These were from the other constituency McIntosh reports to — the ones who paint their faces, adorn themselves in various combinations of the club’s blue, white, silver and black apparel, and stand at the corner of West Morehead Street and McNinch Street three hours before kickoff preparing for a March to the Match.

Quote of the Day
We’ve got to make sure we’re the absolute best members of the American Conference as we can possibly be. Tim Pernetti, their commissioner, is as dynamic as it gets. ... We’re going to have trusted and transparent conversations. ... But he’s also not naïve, and he knows we have aspirations. But the reality is those aspirations will be based off the performance in the American. So we’re going to be a great member there.
-- Univ. of South Florida CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins, on balancing the school's ambition to get into a Power 4 conference with its current status as a member of the American Conference.
