Kang offers $35 million to buy control of NWSL Spirit

Washington Spirit co-Owner Y. Michele Kang has increased her offer of $25 million to $35 million for the controlling stake of the NWSL club from majority owner Steve Baldwin, according to an email sent this morning to the league’s board of governors and seen by SBJ's Mark J. Burns.

She notified Baldwin of the revised offer yesterday. In recent months, players have called on Baldwin to sell the team amid prior allegations of a toxic working environment, which has included the league’s termination of former Spirit coach Richie Burke in Sept. following a league investigation into the NWSL club.

After Burke’s firing, in mid-October, Baldwin expressed an interest in selling his controlling stake in the Spirit, which he has owned since 2019. That same month, Baldwin also said he’d give up his title of CEO & Managing Partner of the Spirit but would still maintain his ownership.
