Hornets Sports & Entertainment released a statement stating that it “would back the push for the WNBA to bring back the Charlotte Sting,” a franchise that played from 1997-2006. CardWorks SVP Erica Berman and the Berman family are “leading the charge in bidding for an expansion team in Charlotte” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 2/11). In January, a fan-led petition garnered thousands of signatures, and basketball icons with ties to the Queen City offered endorsements of the WNBA’s return to Charlotte in recent months. More than 4,000 signed a Change.org petition in 2024 to “Bring Back the Charlotte Sting!” (SBJ).
