With three years to go until the opening of the Olympics, LA28 organizers on Monday released the competition schedule for the Games.
The opening ceremony will kick off in primetime on the East Coast at 8pm ET on July 14, 2028, with events shared between L.A. Memorial Coliseum and Sofi Stadium. The closing ceremony at L.A. Memorial Coliseum will be at 9pm on July 30, 2028.
LA28 will include 844 ticketed events. As is customary, early round play in team sports such as basketball, soccer and (new for the LA28 Games) cricket, will kick off two days before opening.
The Games’ first medal will come in triathlon at Venice Beach on July 15, 2028.
While LA28 is flipping the calendar for two of the Games’ biggest sports -- with track & field moved up to the first week while swimming goes the second week -- the marathon will remain in the final weekend of the Games.
Historically held in the reverse order, the two sports swapped so that swimming could be contested at SoFi Stadium. Organizers will have a temporary pool installed before the Games, cover it up for the opening ceremony and then prepare the venue for competition in the second week.
With the swap, swimming will close out the Games with the final competition scheduled before closing.
LA28 organizers developed the schedule in consultation with broadcast partners, including the Olympic Broadcasting Services, and the international federations for each sport.
The announcement three years out comes as PlayLA has surpassed 1 million program enrollments. With a $160M investment from LA28 and the IOC, the program allows kids ages to 17 to participate in Olympic and adaptive sports.
