MLB Franchise Notes: D-backs not for sale after minority sale report

Phoenix-based KMVP-FM reporter John Gambadoro reported that the D-backs are “not for sale” despite a report that the team sold a minority stake two years ago. Gambadoro noted that the team does not “publicly announce the minority partners,” and the only way a percentage would have “become available is if one of those minority owners was selling their shares.” Sportico had reported that two years ago, Broncos owner Rob Walton bought a 10% share in the club (X, 3/3).

LEARN MORE: In Tampa, Lucy Marques noted the Rays on Tuesday “held the first of three community engagement sessions on their plan to build a new stadium on Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus.” About 100 people “gathered” in a campus auditorium to hear Rays CEO Ken Babby and Hillsborough College President Ken Atwater “speak and answer questions for more than two hours.” Before taking questions, Babby “shared a new video rendering and updates to the project’s plan.” Babby also said that the Rays and the college are working on the college’s “temporary space during construction” (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 3/3).

FAN FEST FUN: In Las Vegas, Mick Akers noted the A’s will kick off Big League Weekend and their spring training games against the Angels this weekend with “a fan fest in Downtown Summerlin.” The free event will “include A’s alumni appearances, a speed pitch activation, a live DJ, face painters and balloon artists and the A’s Cast broadcasting live on site.” This season will mark the first time the A’s will play regular season games in Las Vegas, with two series planned in June to take place at Las Vegas Ballpark (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 3/3).
