World Cup Notes: K.C. mayor softens stance on city liquor laws

In K.C., Katelyn Umholtz reported K.C. Mayor Quinton Lucas appeared to “soften his stance on the city’s restaurants and bars extending liquor sale hours” during the World Cup after a City Council committee meeting Tuesday. Lucas introduced an ordinance that his office said would “partially exempt Kansas City from a Missouri law that allows local governments to temporarily extend hours of on-premise consumption for holders of liquor” until 5am CT from June 11 to July 19. In that timeframe, K.C. bars and restaurants could “extend their alcohol-serving hours” to 3am CT (K.C. STAR, 5/13).

BETTER SERVICE: The CP’s Hudes & Johnson report Rogers Communications Inc. will kick in CA$27M to “upgrade cellular capacity at Canada’s two host venues and surrounding areas.” The company announced Thursday that it spent CA$22M to “improve the 5G+ network at BMO Field and the nearby area,” and an additional CA$5M to “enhance network coverage in key regions across Vancouver.” Some of those efforts will “improve performance on devices no matter which of the Big Three carriers a customer is subscribed with, while certain upgrades would only be felt by Rogers customers” (CP, 5/14).

CARE FOR THE CUP: WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY’s Noor Lobad reported skin care brand Paula’s Choice is tapping into soccer’s global fandom, “signing on as the official skin care sponsor” of the World Cup. As part of the deal, the Unilever-owned brand is launching its “Proud Supporter of Your Skin” campaign, which “seeks to emphasize the durability of its products even in high-pressure and strenuous environments -- for instance, sports stadiums” (WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY, 5/13).
