Chargers’ schedule release again draws wide praise

The Chargers always have the “slickest, well-produced, easter-egg laden video” of the NFL schedule release, and this year was “no different,” according to Nick Gray of the Nashville TENNESSEAN. The team did a “spoof of the popular Halo video game series, and it really does look like a Halo carbon copy.” The Chargers were “heavy on the details.” Many on social media were “interested in how the Chargers’ video would poke” at the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini story, and the team did not “disappoint” (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 5/14). USA TODAY’s Nancy Armour wrote as the Patriots were unveiled as Chargers’ Week 12 opponent, the video “seemed to glitch and a message appeared in the middle of the screen.” The message said, “Nothing to see here. Press X to skip this checkpoint,” mocking Vrabel and Russini’s “overheated reactions.” When the Chargers’ video resumed playing, there was a sign reading, “Next Photo Dump 1 Mile” and an alert from the N.Y. Post in the bottom right-hand corner (USA TODAY, 5/14).

CALLED OUT: In Houston, Matt Young wrote the Chargers’ social media team “is a dynasty.” When announcing the Texans matchup, they took aim at Texans QB C.J. Stroud. They used the “now infamous audio of Stroud trying to encourage” Bears QB Caleb Williams after the Texans beat Chicago in 2024. Looking close at the animated field the Texans are playing on in the Halo production, there “appear to be orange trash cans lining the sidelines.” Although, the video does not use an Astros logo, “there is a blue star on each trash can.” At one point in the Texans’ portion of the video, a push notification pops up that read “GetHigher77 has sent you a friend request.” GetHigher77 was allegedly “one of the Twitter burner accounts” used by Rockets F Kevin Durant, which “caused some turmoil” during the Rockets season (HOUSTON CHRONICLE. 5/14).

NO TEAM’S SAFE: SI’s Eva Geitheim wrote the Chargers “did not spare anyone in their video.” The team perfectly used Chiefs TE Travis Kelce’s mother Donna Kelce’s “home renovations as the joke” for their game against the Chiefs. The “Donna Kelce Modest Home Reno Bundle” graphic included the “free 4” shirts the Chiefs wore during Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s suspension (SI, 5/15). THE ATHLETIC’s Bardahl & Yousuf wrote the Chargers have “set the standard across the league for schedule release videos and this year was top-notch once again.” The Colts are not even on the Chargers’ schedule, but they “caught a stray right off the bat with a Microsoft permission disclaimer” (THE ATHLETIC, 5/15).
