The Texans won the contest of “best comedy video” at the 18th Annual Shorty Awards beating out the likes of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and standup comedian star John Mulaney, according to Matt Young of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. It is an international award show honoring the best content across digital and social media platforms. The Texans “knew they had a winner on their hands” when they featured owner Cal McNair in a social media clip that went viral after a missed high-five between him and QB C.J. Stroud. The video “hilariously built on a moment that happened on national TV” following last year’s “Sunday Night Football” win at K.C. The 71-second video ended up being the Instagram post with the “second-most interactions in the entire NFL, only behind a prank video by Texans mascot Toro.” Texans Exec Dir/Digital Media & Content Distribution Jay McDevitt said, “It’s very surreal. We weren’t competing against other NFL teams, we were competing against some of the biggest names in comedy and entertainment.” McDevitt credits his boss for “having the self-awareness and trust in his employees to make the moment happen” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 5/20).
