Justin Bieber has been “added as a performer” to the halftime show at the World Cup final, joining the lineup as a co-headliner alongside Madonna, Shakira and BTS, according to Steven Horowitz of VARIETY. FIFA and Global Citizen are staging the first halftime show in World Cup history on July 19 at N.Y. N.J. Stadium. The 11-minute spectacle will also feature Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel and PS22 Chorus alongside Coldplay, whose lead singer Chris Martin curated the show in his ongoing role as international curator of the Global Citizen Festival. The Muppets’ Kermit, Miss Piggy and more will “also appear during the celebration.” The halftime show is being staged in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which is working to raise $100M to “expand access to education and football for children across the world.” The fund has already raised $50M and will “match $1 from every ticket sold to World Cup matches in a donation to the tournament” (VARIETY, 7/8).
Bieber’s addition to the World Cup halftime show follows his appearance at another recent sports event, announcing the Maple Leafs No. 1 overall draft selection at last month’s NHL Draft (SBJ).
