The Women’s Pro Baseball League unveiled its team names Wednesday before its inaugural season begins Aug. 1 -- the N.Y. Heights, S.F. Firebells, L.A. Queens and Boston Hunters -- with all four inspired by a female trailblazer.

The Heights were inspired by Dorthy Irene Height, a civil and women’s rights pioneer from N.Y. The Firebells were inspired by Lillie Hitchock Coit aka “Firebelle” who championed volunteer firefighters in S.F. The Queens were inspired by Lizzie Murphy aka “Queen of the Diamond” as the first woman to play against Major League players in 1922. And the Hunters were inspired by Harriot K. Hunt, the first woman to apply to Harvard Medical School (1847) and establish a medical practice in America.

The WPBL described the logos as follows:

  • Heights: Graphic lines inspired by the speed of a fastball form both the N.Y. skyline and the shape of the “H.”
  • Firebells: The Firebells mark fuses a bell and phoenix into a single form -- the alarm and the answer.
  • Queens: The crown mark reimagines four baseball diamonds into a minimalist symbol of power, prestige and the game itself.
  • Hunters: Inspired by the osprey, a focused and fearless coastal predator, the Hunters mark represents precision, instinct and action.

The team names and logos were officially unveiled at the New Era Flagship Store in N.Y.
