Pac-12 teams will face COVID forfeits

The Pac-12 "will be returning to its longstanding game forfeiture rule" this season, meaning if a team is unable to play due to COVID-19, it "will have to forfeit the game, and it will count as a conference loss in the standings." The Pac-12 in a statement released today said Commissioner George Kliavkoff will have "discretion to determine whether an institution is at fault or primarily at fault for an inability to play a contest based on the facts of the situations." If Kliavkoff "finds the school at fault, it will be forced to forfeit" (THEATHLETIC.com, 8/12). The loss of TV revenue "from a forfeiture (in the $7 million range for games on ESPN and Fox) will be shared by all the schools" in the Pac-12 (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 8/12).
