Brittney Griner's detention in Russia extended

WNBA Phoenix Mercury C Brittney Griner's detention in Russia "has been extended until May 19," as first reported by Russian news agency TASS. The Khimkinsky court of the Moscow region "ruled to detain Griner for at least two more months" after she was allegedly found with hashish oil in her luggage at the airport. The WNBA and WNBPA "did not immediately respond to a request for comment." It is still "not clear when in February Griner, who plays in Russia during the WNBA's winter off-season, was detained." Her detention was announced after Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24" (REUTERS, 3/17).

It is important to "review WHY there’s so much deliberate silence" around Griner. The fact that "things are quiet is intentional." If the "people closest to her decide to switch strategies, we will know," as WNBA players "mobilize quickly and strongly to support each other" (TWITTER.com, 3/17).
