Gabba renovation praised by Aussie sports leaders

Cricket Australia and the Australian Football League are "ecstatic with the Queensland government’s plan to transform the Gabba into the main stadium" for a '32 Brisbane Olympics but are "still coming to grips with the impact of years of construction." Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's plan to "rebuild the Gabba to a 50,000-seat stadium" could mean "new irrigation systems, team facilities, a wicket and a futuristic undercover link down to Raymond Park."

Cricket Australia interim CEO Nick Hockley said that the upgrade "would ensure the Gabba remained a world-class cricketing venue for generations to come." Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said that the redevelopment was a "once-in-a-generation opportunity that would benefit cricket fans and players alike." The Gabba lost its preferred First Test status in '18 when a renovated Adelaide Oval was "given the nod, a situation repeated" in '20 as well (BRISBANE TIMES, 4/21).
