Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday unveiled two new British sports documentaries: "Rooney," about former soccer player Wayne Rooney, and "Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story," about boxing champ Adams. Adamsâ doc will stream first, on Nov. 12, followed by Rooneyâs in early '22. "Rooney," which was directed by BAFTA winner Matt Smith, "looks at the highs and lows of Rooneyâs career as well as the scrutiny he faced in his personal life," with contributions from some of soccerâs most famous faces including David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Gary Neville and Sven-GĂśran Eriksson as well as his wife, Colleen, and other friends and family (VARIETY, 10/12).
Rooney said that he feels both he and Coleen "are unfairly judged and is looking forward to changing the perception." He said, "I want people to have a better understanding of me as a person really. Throughout a young sportspersonâs life they go through difficult periods and there is a lot of me talking about moments where I was really down, I didnât want to be around anyone" (PA, 10/12).
