Churchill Downs to Admit Fans at Rescheduled Kentucky Derby

Although fewer tickets will be made available this year, spectators will be allowed to attend the rescheduled Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs Racetrack. The number of people allowed inside will depend on coronavirus-related safety guidelines set by local health and government officials in Kentucky. Additional safety protocols are due to be announced soon.

Guests will be “encouraged” but not required to wear a face covering as part of the Derby’s new Fan Code of Conduct. Betting stations and concession stands will be open, though food items will be covered and individually presented to guests instead of being served at tables.

The 146th edition of the Derby was originally scheduled for May 2, but the pandemic forced its postponement. Tickets purchased for the May race date will be valid for entry to the September race. Fans who purchased tickets for the original event through Churchill Downs’ website or Ticketmaster but are unable to attend the upcoming Derby can also receive refunds. Churchill Downs will permit fans to enter the race with both printed and mobile tickets.

The Belmont Stakes, which is usually the third-leg of the Triple Crown, was held June 20 without fans, and was won by Tiz the Law.
