NHL Media Notes: NBC Not Using Canadian Freelancers In Toronto

In Toronto, Steve Simmons reports NBC will fly “upwards of 50 broadcast people to Toronto ... to serve as the world feed” for all NHL games played in the hub city. However, many Canadian broadcast freelancers “are not at all happy about the snub.” One freelancer said, “The NHL sold us out. Our own government sold us out. ... I could understand (NBC) bringing people in if we couldn’t do the job, but it’s proven we can” (TORONTO SUN, 7/14).

STAYING AT HOME: In Boston, Chad Finn reported RSNs are "not expected to be invited to broadcast from hub cities Edmonton and Toronto." NESN "will have the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but no series beyond that, as all broadcasting rights after the initial round belong to NBC Sports" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/12).
