Clemson Limits Memorial Stadium's Capacity To 19,000

Clemson announced that Memorial Stadium "would have only about 19,000 fans" per game for football this season, according to Todd Shanesy of the Spartanburg HERALD-JOURNAL. Fans "will be seated primarily in groups of two or four throughout the stadium," which can hold more than 81,000, and tailgating is "discouraged and masks will be mandatory for those not eating or drinking." Clemson "will first reach out to donors who decided not to opt-out this season" (Spartanburg HERALD-JOURNAL, 8/28). In Columbia, Matt Connolly notes parking lots "will open three hours prior to kickoff, but Clemson is asking fans not to tailgate during the 2020 season." Tents, trailers and large groups "are prohibited." Pregame traditions like the Tiger Band parade and Tiger Walk and postgame traditions like Gathering at the Paw "will not take place in 2020" (Columbia STATE, 8/28).

HEELS' HOUSE: Univ. of North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said that the football team “will play home games without fans at least through September this season.” Guskiewicz added the caveat, “assuming that we are still playing.” He added that the “current plan for UNC football is to play a reduced fall schedule” starting with a Sept. 12 home game against Syracuse, and that “if there is a change it will likely come within the next week” (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 8/28).
