Texas, Oklahoma won't join SEC early as talks break down

Texas and Oklahoma will join the SEC in 2025 as originally planned as the efforts to leave in time for the 2024 football season “have stalled and a deal is not expected to come to fruition,” according to sources cited by Pete Thamel of ESPN.com. The various parties “couldn’t come to terms amid a complex negotiation” between the two schools, ESPN, Fox and the Big 12. The main roadblock was “how to create equitable value for what Fox would lose in 2024 -- the equivalent of seven football games featuring Oklahoma and Texas that command premium advertising.” The Big 12 meetings taking place the weekend had served as an “unofficial deadline to get a deal done” (ESPN.com, 2/3).
