McCants Lewis has dedicated much of her life to the causes of diversity and civil rights. Beyond being one of the highest-ranking Black women working in hockey, she is the chair of August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh, an adjunct professor focusing on civil rights at Duquesne Law School and a past president and current board member of the ACLU Pennsylvania. With the Penguins, she leads the team’s DEI council and inspired the creation of the Willie O’Ree Academy, a mentorship program for young Black hockey players named after the first Black person to play in the NHL.
