October 23, 1921 -- The 1st APFA (American Professional Football Association) game is played when the Packers defeated the Minneapolis Marines, 7-6 at Hagemeister Park. An agreement to form the APFA was made by four independent teams from Ohio on Aug. 20, 1920. The APFA had 14 teams that played during its inaugural season. The APFA renamed the National Football League in 1922.
