Some notable winners included Michael Jordan winning Best Male Athlete and Monica Seles winning Best Female Athlete. The Best Team award went to the Cowboys and Jim Valvano was presented with the first Arthur Ashe Courage Award. During his speech, Valvano announced the creation of the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.
