The future of professional women’s hockey in North America is brighter than ever thanks to the investment of Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter in the creation and operation of the PWHL, a single-entity league featuring many of the world’s top players and led by a well-respected board of sports business executives. With three teams each in the U.S. and Canada, the PWHL exceeded expectations in its inaugural season, drawing record crowds for women’s hockey and attracting 40 corporate sponsors at the league and team levels. That commercial success propelled revenue to a level leadership didn’t anticipate reaching until its fourth season of operation. — A.S.
