Haas has named Laura Muller as the race engineer for Esteban Ocon, making her "F1's first female race engineer in a move that shows F1 is changing, albeit slowly, to becoming more inclusive." Muller's promotion "feels like a seminal moment for female engineers and sends a loud message of what is possible to younger generations." The significance of her promotion is something Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu is "acutely aware of while insisting she's there on merit, not simply because of her gender." Muller joined Haas in 2022 and was previously working in the team's simulator before moving to the role of performance engineer. Muller's hiring came "alongside" the appointments of Ronan O'Hare as Oliver Bearman's race engineer and the return of Mark Lowe as sporting director (MOTORSPORT, 1/21). The race engineer role is "one of the most public-facing in the sport -- essentially an additional set of eyes for the driver, who communicates with them on a radio throughout a grand-prix weekend" (London TIMES, 1/21).
