After hosting the Women’s World Cup in 2015, Canada will stage matches in the men’s tournament for the first time in 2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who positioned himself as a foil to Donald Trump during his successful 2025 campaign, has touted hosting the World Cup as “the biggest of deals” for the country. The federal government has allocated $320 million CAD (US $235.8 million) for safety and security around the tournament. Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden, a decorated Olympic kayaker and now a member of Parliament, is serving as Canada’s “FIFA sherpa,” coordinating federal preparations and working with the U.S., Mexico and FIFA on issues ranging from security to fan mobility.
