Longtime Ravens radio voice and WBAL-TV Sports Dir Gerry Sandusky said Wednesday morning that he “is retiring.” His final 11pm ET newscast is “set for April 17.” The Towson Univ. graduate began his broadcasting career in Florida in 1984. He returned to Baltimore in 1988 as a sports anchor, then was named WBAL-TV’s sports director in 1993 before earning play-by-play responsibilities for the Ravens in 2006. WBAL-TV noted that Sandusky’s successor calling Ravens games “will be named at a later date” (BALTIMORE SUN, 4/1).

Over the years, Sandusky “punctuated Ravens wins with the catchphrase, ‘The hay is in the barn!’” According to a 2023 article in TU Magazine, Sandusky said that he first heard it as a member of Towson’s football team, when late college football coach Phil Albert would “utter the phrase to mark the end of practice.” In a statement, Ravens President Sashi Brown thanked Sandusky for his years on the air as the “Voice of the Ravens.” Sandusky said that deciding to step away “was a difficult decision,” but ultimately “he chose to spend more time with his family.” His daughter gave birth to twins in September (BALTIMORE BANNER, 4/1).
