League One Volleyball is bringing an expansion franchise to Miami for the 2027 season, growing the league to 10 teams and introducing an Eastern and Western Conference format.
LOVB Commissioner Sandra Idehen described the league’s first two seasons as “proof of concept,” adding that the new franchise takes the league “to scale.”
“It really takes you to that next level of being in a true professional league,” she said.
Miami will join LOVB’s Eastern Conference alongside Atlanta, Madison, Minnesota and Nebraska, while Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, Salt Lake and San Francisco will comprise the Western Conference.
Idehen said the conference structure creates both opportunities and complexities across league operations and media: “There are a lot of things you can do from a schedule optimization standpoint … media optimization too. … It gives you a lot of space to build from a storytelling standpoint.”
LOVB launched its professional league in January 2025 with franchises in Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Madison, Nebraska and Salt Lake. The league has since announced expansion clubs in Los Angeles, Minnesota and San Francisco, with Miami becoming the 10th franchise set to debut in season three. Venue and ownership details for the Miami franchise are still being finalized.
Idehen noted strengthening LOVB’s East Coast footprint was a key factor in selecting Miami, citing the league’s established youth presence in the area, a strong collegiate volleyball scene and the city’s standing as a key media market.
Idehen also highlighted the global nature of Miami, noting roughly one-third of LOVB’s athletes are international.
The conference structure could eventually lead to rivalry-focused scheduling and new playoff formats, though additional scheduling details will be announced at a later date.
“We’re ready for that complexity … each of those steps … are just signaling the growth of the league,” Idehen said.
