The K.C. City Council could vote as early as Thursday afternoon whether the NWSL Current receives “up to $235 million in bonds in the creation of a new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district” that would help fund an expansion of CPKC Stadium, according to P.J. Green of the K.C. STAR. The entire project would also include expanding Current Landing, the area around the stadium, and the “construction of a parking garage.” Expanding the stadium would “increase the capacity from 11,500 to 18,000.” The estimated cost of the project is currently at $1.4B, which includes the “finished construction of Current Landing.” The Current previously used $5.5M from the Missouri Development Funding Board in 2022 “to help improve the infrastructure to form CPKC Stadium.” The team has spent more than $200M “on the construction of its training facilities and home stadium with minimal public funding” (K.C. STAR, 6/10).
