Tennis players Venus and Serena Williams are making a return to doubles tennis at Wimbledon with a wild card, and it is a “huge coup for the championships” in the absence of Carlos Alcaraz due to a wrist injury, according to Tom Kershaw of the London TIMES. Serena made a winning return in doubles after nearly four years off the court at Queen’s last week alongside Victoria Mboko, but their campaign was prematurely cut short after Mboko sustained a knee injury. For Serena, a sentimental farewell alongside her sister, Venus, was “always likely in SW19” (London TIMES, 6/16). THE ATHLETIC’s Hansen & Eccleshare wrote it is “difficult to remember a more exciting bit of doubles news in tennis history.” While “not a bolt out of the blue, the Williams sisters reuniting at Wimbledon will resonate far beyond sports.” The fact that it will be Serena’s first Grand Slam in four years is a “huge part of all of this, as well as the fact that it’s been so long since she played doubles with her sister.” For it to be at Wimbledon “adds to the significance given how successful both have been at the All England Club” (THE ATHLETIC, 5/16).
