- EA Sports College Football 27 debuted to strong reviews July 9. It also debuted to controversy, as streamers and players discovered microtransactions that would speed up progression in the Road to Glory and Dynasty single-player modes. And they did not take it well, firing off criticism in social media and with review bombs. Such microtransactions are a mainstay of mobile game economies, but console and PC gaming communities soundly reject these. EA Sports issued an apology on July 10 for the microtransactions and removed them. IGN has the full story. This serves as a good reminder that just because one tactic works in mobile game monetization doesn’t mean it’ll work in other environments.
- The X Games are returning to video games, at least for a limited time in EA Sports’ Skate, the publisher’s skateboarding sim. This is the first time the X Games have appeared in a video game since Jeremy Bloom was named its CEO in 2024.
- Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition launches Aug. 6 as an Apple Arcade exclusive as the company looks to add more sports games to its mobile game subscription service.
- The U.S. women’s national soccer team and its players association renewed their multiyear licensing and marketing deal with EA Sports for EA Sports FC. The USWNT will continue appearing in EA Sports’ soccer series. OneTeam Partners assisted in this deal.
- Ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final, David Beckham, Zinédine Zidane and Zlatan Ibrahimović will appear in a video conversation from EA Sports Presents Icons of Football, launching Saturday on EA Sports’ YouTube and Spotify channels.
