CHARLOTTE -- NASCAR this afternoon officially rolled out its next generation car model that will debut in '22 at an event in Charlotte. The new cars across all the manufacturers (Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota) are being touted as what the sport hopes will evolve everything from the cost to team owners to the entertainment level for fans. The new cars have much more parts that will now be required to be bought from a single supplier than in the past, which the sport hopes will quash arms races between the teams.
The car itself is expect to cost perhaps up to half as much as prior cars eventually, though that will not be the case immediately due to one-time costs being incurred with the changeover. Manufacturers were also allowed more latitude to style the car more like its road cars, and the cars have been designed with a lower roof among other features to make them look more like coupes.
Among those in attendance at today's event, which was streamed on NASCAR's digital/social channels, were NASCAR Exec Vice Chair Lesa France Kennedy, Vice Chair Mike Helton, President Steve Phelps, Senior VP/Strategic Development Ben Kennedy and a host of team owners and industry.
