Cubs officially make Carter Hawkins new GM

The Cubs on Friday officially hired Indians Assistant GM Carter Hawkins as their new GM, completing the "first offseason task" for Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer. The position had been "vacant since Hoyer was promoted in November, replacing the departed Theo Epstein." The search "began in earnest weeks ago." The 37-year-old Hawkins spent 14 seasons with the Indians, the last five as Assistant GM. Hawkins’ player-development background is "extensive and attractive for an organization that must continue to find and develop talent after moving on from its core players within the last year" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/15).
