The Mariners are taking part in an initiative attempting to "stem the amount of disposable plastic straws clogging oceans," according to Molly Blue of the Portland OREGONIAN. The team as part of the Lonely Whale Foundation's "Strawless in Seattle" campaign has pledged to "go strawless for the month of September," when it will play 15 games at Safeco Field. Fans will "have to request straws" at the ballpark during those games, and they will be given "biodegradable Aardvark 'Strawless in Seattle' branded paper straws." Actor Adrian Grenier, who founded the Lonely Whale Foundation, will "throw out the first pitch" at the Sept. 1 A's-Mariners game (OREGONLIVE.com, 8/23).
