Twins Utilizing High-Speed Cameras To Aid Player Development

The Twins have installed "ultra-high-speed cameras and radar devices" at their Spring Training ballpark, Hammond Stadium, joining the ranks of MLB teams to "invest thousands of dollars in new technology to document players’ every move," according to Phil Miller of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. The Edgertronic cameras, now "installed behind two bullpen mounds, provide high-resolution video taken at 500 frames or more per second, slowing down motion that is impossible to see with a naked eye, right down to the fingertips as a pitch is released." The same systems can be used on "hitters’ swings, catchers’ receptions and fielders’ movements." The Twins will use that information to "help players make adjustments or spot mistakes they might not realize they are making." It also gives the team’s analysts data to help them "explore new techniques or ideas" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 2/14).
