UMBC signs 15-year naming-rights deal for basketball arena

The Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore County has signed a 15-year, $5M naming-rights deal with Maryland-based Chesapeake Employers' Insurance Co. that will rename the school’s three-year old events center as Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena, according to Holden Wilen of the BALTIMORE BUSINESS JOURNAL. UMBC AD Brian Barrio indicated that school officials “undertook a ‘thorough’ process to find the right partner, including having conversations with at least ‘a couple dozen’ companies.” Barrio: “It's certainly preferable to us to have a partner that understands Greater Baltimore as opposed to a national partner that is not as entrenched in this area." Wilen notes interest in the arena’s naming rights “boomed after UMBC's men's basketball team pulled off a historic upset against Virginia" in the '18 NCAA Tournament. The arena opened “six weeks before the team's big win” (BIZJOURNALS.com, 4/19). Maryland-based Team Services LLC brokered the deal on behalf of UMBC, while OVG manages the building (SBJ).
