Sports Data Labs is partnering with Case Western Reserve University School of Law to create a novel Athlete Data Lab that will examine the multi-faceted legal issues and privacy rights pertaining to athlete data. SD Labs was co-founded by a pair of Case Western Law alums, Mark Gorski and Stan Mimoto, and partnered with the NFLPA last year and has also worked with the Professional Squash Association.
Among the real-world concepts to be examined in the lab are the collection, processing, and monetization of an athlete’s personal data of all kinds — everything from medical record data to biomechanical analysis. The Athlete Data Lab also will discuss how this data can be a form of digital property under varying state and global laws. It will begin with the fall 2023 semester under the direction of law professor Craig Nard, whose specialties include law related to intellectual property, patents and innovation.
