The Angels and P/DH Shohei Ohtani have agreed to a "one-year contract for next season" worth $30M. Ohtani was “going to be eligible for salary arbitration after this season,” but the deal means he and the Angels “will avoid the process.” The reigning AL MVP will "become a free agent after the 2023 season.” Ohtani’s $30M contract is a "record for an arbitration-eligible player” (L.A. TIMES, 10/2). The deal provides the "strongest signal yet that the Angels have no intention of trading Ohtani before he’s eligible for free agency," and “may try to sign him to an extension before the end of the 2023 season” (USA TODAY, 10/1).
