The WM Phoenix Open had its highest final-round audience in seven years on Sunday, as CBS averaged nearly 3.8 million viewers for Chris Gotterup’s playoff win over Hideki Matsuyama. The 2019 final round drew just over 4 million viewers on NBC for a Rickie Fowler victory.
Sunday peaked at 4.9 million viewers, with the event wrapping up just before Super Bowl LX kicked off on NBC. Likely helping numbers was World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot a final-round 64 and finished one stroke outside the playoff. The final round for last year’s event, won in a runaway by Thomas Detry, averaged 2.9 million viewers on CBS (panel only).
CBS averaged 2.4 million on Saturday. For the weekend, CBS averaged nearly 3.1 million viewers.
Meanwhile, Golf Channel’s early round coverage continues to draw strong numbers this season, with the net averaging 710,000 viewers across Thursday-Friday. Friday, in particular, averaged 849,000 viewers, which is up 22% from last year and the highest Friday for the event since 2013.
