Beyond the live game action, the FIFA World Cup has brought a host of new soccer-related documentaries across myriad platforms, proving a wealth of new content for viewers. Production also has not been limited to FIFA (Fox and Tubi) or U.S. Soccer (HBO Max) media partners, as platforms like Netflix, Roku, TikTok, ESPN, Paramount+, WhatsApp, FIFA+ and X.
As World Cup rightsholder, Fox turned its attention to one key documentary, “Summer of ’94,” which looked at the USMNT from that year. As media partner for the USMNT, HBO was given insider access over four years to create the five-part follow docu-series “U.S. Against the World.”
Perhaps the platform taking advantage of the World Cup the most to air sports docs is Netflix. The company has pushed out at least 11 soccer-related docs, including the first in the “Untold” franchise focused on the U.K. market. There also were at least five Netflix docs focused on Brazil. Netflix even did a feature film, “Mexico ’86,” which told the story of how the country landed the 1986 World Cup.
