A former Olympic fencer for West Germany, Bach has been running the IOC since September 2013 and in that role is among the most influential sports executives in the world, sitting atop a hierarchy of dozens of sports federations, hundreds of nations and thousands of athletes. His eight-year term ends in 2021, when he will be eligible to run for a second, four-year term.
