The SEC baseball tournament later this month will be the first college competition to feature a strike zone challenge system.
Following the lead of MLB’s new ABS, the SEC is introducing its own version on an experimental basis for every game in Hoover, Ala., beginning on May 19. The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee approved the conference’s proposal to try the ball-strike challenges earlier this week.
Hawk-Eye Innovations cameras will provide the underlying technology to track pitch location, just as it does in MLB. The primary difference in what the SEC will use is that each team will begin with three challenges, instead of two; successful challenges will be retained.
The SEC has collaborated with Hawk-Eye on replay in a variety of sports, including baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball and basketball.
