Gene Sykes will continue to serve as chairman of the USOPC after a board vote this week. Sykes, a longtime partner at Goldman Sachs, has served as USOPC chair since his election in July 2022. He was elected as a member of the IOC in 2024.
He previously worked as CEO of L.A.’s bid to host the 2024 Games and later as CEO of the organizing committee after the IOC awarded those Olympics and Paralympics to L.A. for 2028.
Sykes will serve in the role through 2030.
The USOPC board also voted for a second four-year term for Bubba Cunningham, the longtime North Carolina AD who is stepping down this summer. He will continue to remain a senior advisor at UNC and offers perspective on the USOPC board as it continues to support legislation that would provide stability in college sports, the pipeline for Olympic athletes.
In addition, the USOPC board elected Purdue Univ. President Mung Chiang to a first four-year term. Chiang was appointed to the board in 2024 to fill the independent director position Sykes vacated when he was made an IOC member.
