The Chiefs are elevating two longtime executives as Kansas City prepares to host its first 2026 FIFA World Cup match on June 16 and as the team advances long-term plans for a new $3B domed stadium in Kansas.

Matt Kenny, previously executive vice president of Arrowhead Operations and Events, has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operations officer. He will continue to oversee stadium and training facility operations while taking a lead role in the design, development and operations of the new stadium, practice facility and adjacent real estate projects.

Brandon Hamilton moves from vice president of stadium operations and facilities to project executive, facilities development. In his new role, Hamilton will serve as the construction lead for the new stadium and practice facility where he will oversee design with architects, engineers and other project partners. He will report to Kenny.

Kenny joined the Chiefs in 2017 as vice president of stadium services and events after senior roles with the Cubs and Brewers. He was promoted to executive vice president of Arrowhead Operations and Events in 2021, effectively becoming the club’s top operations voice, leading the team that runs the stadium and training complex, including fan experience, security, parking, special events and capital planning.

Nike dropped a new film for the World Cup called “Rip the Script” with a “chaotic, joyful, six-minute anthem that attempts to win over both young, devoted fans and the soccer-curious.” The spot was created by Weiden+Kennedy and directed by Dan Streit. Nike’s ambitious World Cup campaign comes amid a “turnaround to restore its brand and reverse sluggish sales.” It is “doubling down on soccer and the tournament as key parts of that effort.” Instead of making a traditional commercial the centerpiece of its campaign, as it has in the past, Nike’s film “sets the scene for the next 12 weeks of content.” The film is “rich with Easter eggs, jokes, and references for fans” (ADWEEK, 6/4).

The campaign’s expansive cast includes France F Kylian Mbappé, Brazil F Vinicius Jr., Norway F Erling Haaland, Lakers F LeBron James, Portugal F Cristiano Ronaldo, media personality Kim Kardashian, CBS Sports’ Kate Scott, actor Channing Tatum, rappers Travis Scott, Young Miko and actor Jason Sudeikis, among dozens of others. Former soccer players like Eric Cantona, Ronaldinho, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Didier Drogba and Jorge Campos also appear (AD AGE, 6/4).

N.Y. Mayor Zohran Mamdani is declaring each FIFA World Cup match day in New Jersey a “gridlock alert day,” which “urges people to take subways, walk or bike rather than drive in Manhattan.” The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which oversees the city’s transit network, will “run additional subway trains to accommodate the increased ridership” to and from MetLife Stadium. There will be “no truck deliveries allowed between 60th Street and 30th Street” on the eight game days beginning June 13 “six hours before the match and three hours after.” On 42nd Street, only “FIFA shuttle buses, MTA buses and emergency vehicles will be allowed.” Mamdani said, “We know how to put on big events.” City officials have “been preparing to accommodate the anticipated surge.” Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mamdani are “asking those in the city to be patient with crowds, security lines and more vehicles on the road” (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 6/4).

Real Madrid opts into EuroLeague for next year with eye still on NBA Europe

Facing a June 30 deadline, Real Madrid has re-signed with EuroLeague for the 2026-27 season with what is reportedly a single-year commitment that would allow the club to join NBA Europe in the fall of 2027.

EuroLeague -- which remains in talks with the NBA about a potential partnership or merger -- had previously asked its 13 teams to renew for a decade. Barça, Baskonia, Efes, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Maccabi, Milan, Zalgiris, Bayern, Villeurbanne initially opted in. Asvel and Fenerbahçe, which have aspirations to join NBA Europe, had delayed before joining, and now -- as reported first by the Spanish newspaper Diario AS -- Real Madrid is the last team to commit for 2026-27.

If Real Madrid had not renewed, it would have had to pay a significant exit fee or be downgraded to a wild-card role -- meaning it would lose voting privileges and shared broadcast money. But according to multiple reports, the club can still pay €10M to opt out in the summer of 2027 to join NBA Europe. In the meantime, if the two leagues ultimately join forces, the opt-out clause presumably would become unnecessary.

President Trump is “backing the Protect College Sports Act,” the bipartisan piece of legislation introduced in the Senate. Trump, on Truth Social, called the current college sports landscape a “total mess” and said that “everyone is saying that it must be fixed.” He wrote, “I urge the House and Senate to come together to pass a final Bipartisan Law, that I can sign this summer, that reflects the views and input of both chambers.” His support comes a day after a Senate hearing that included former Alabama coach Nick Saban, who co-chaired Trump’s commission on college sports, stating his support for the bill (THE HILL, 6/4).

Virginia Tech has secured $75M in support to advance the university’s athletics strategy and expand one of its academic programs, its largest commitment ever. A majority of the commitment, made anonymously by a four-generation Hokie family, was to athletics, while a sizeable portion was for the Honors College. The athletic portion includes philanthropy for the “Invest to Win” initiative to ensure Hokie competitiveness in today’s rapidly changing collegiate athletics environment, unrestricted funds to be used at the discretion of the university’s athletic director and additional support to be administered through the new Hokie Ventures affiliation approved by the university’s Board of Visitors on Tuesday. The previous largest commitments to Virginia Tech were $50M ones announced in 2018, 2021 and 2023. The previous largest commitment to athletics was $20M announced in December 2025 (Virginia Tech).

To enhance and streamline fundraising for athlete compensation, Tech’s BOV approved the formation of Hokie Ventures, which will “be affiliated with the university but be run by an independent CEO and board of directors.” As the university searches for an athletic director, Hokie Club exec director and Hokie Ventures CEO, prospective candidates “are sure to notice” (Norfolk VIRGINIAN-PILOT, 6/4).

The Hurricanes confirmed their watch party for Saturday night’s Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final has “already sold out,” after opting to “open the Lenovo Center for fans for road games” against the Golden Knights. Tickets went on sale Wednesday afternoon “for $10, with free parking.” The funds go to the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation. Hurricanes Holdings LLC CEO Brian Fork said that the road games “give Carolina a chance to reach those who might not have a chance to see the games live” (TRIANGLE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/4).

Watch party ticket sales “opened first to season ticket holders, then to the general public.” Customers were “limited to six tickets per purchase, instead of four.” The Canes also “warned that tickets were not available for resale and ‘doing so may result in the cancellation of all Canes tickets.’” It took some fans “multiple attempts” to purchase tickets (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 6/4).

Paramount Skydance Corp. has negotiated to add Canada to its list of countries where it airs UFC. Starting next year, Paramount+ will air UFC’s numbered events in Canada -- meaning only the 13 premier annual events and not the second-tier Fight Night shows. Those will still air on Sportsnet for a period unknown. Paramount also has rights to UFC in the U.S., Latin America and Australia. Based on what it will be paid by Paramount starting in 2027, UFC is expected to roughly double its media revenue in Canada when compared to what it is making on PPVs there currently, according to a person familiar with the matter. Paramount is not putting UFC cards behind a pay-per-view paywall.
